Two UNC psychiatry research professors each received a $12.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s Autism Centers of Excellence research program.
Joseph Piven was awarded the grant based on his plan to research brain imaging of infants with a high risk of later developing autism.
Linmarie Sikich, who also received a grant, will use the grant to establish a research network, the ACE SOARS Network, to develop treatments for autism spectrum disorders.
UNC is one of only two institutions in the nation that received more than one Autism Centers of Excellence grant.
UNC is also ranked second among the top 25 institutions in the world that promote autism research.
