UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont holds health services expo

Community members had a chance to receive a free checkup and other health-related services Saturday.

The UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont held its seventh annual expo where employees of UNC Hospitals, local private businesses and nonprofits volunteered their time to come together and showcase their services free of cost.

“We want to give health information that will positively impact whoever comes through these doors,” said Jamy McGee, health education director at the center and head event organizer for the expo.

Susan Chesser, health educator at the center and one of the co-organizers, said the event was a great opportunity to publicize local health care resources.

“We have so many resources in this community, and we want to make sure everybody becomes aware of the health and wellness opportunities we have in the area,” Chesser said.

About 200 people attended the event and received free services such as flu shots, hearing and cholesterol screenings.

John Boreyko, wellness center member and UNC alumnus, said he found the services offered at the event to be helpful and reassuring.

“(The screening) takes the burden off the doctor when you get it done by mid-level practitioners — so you don’t have to worry about remembering to get it done during appointments,” he said.

Myra Austin, who represented the Orange County Department on Aging, said the expo was helpful in reaching out to the community.

“We’ve encountered lots of folks who haven’t known about us, and we’ve been in Orange County for over 30 years,” said Austin, who is a senior center administrator for the department.

UNC senior Melanie Johnson volunteered at the expo to help raise money for Swim for Smiles, an organization that benefits the N.C Children’s Hospital.

“It’s been a nice way of meeting people and pubbing our event, so I’ve had fun,” Johnson said.

The center raffled off prizes, including a free trial membership to its facility.

Judy Hinderliter, nutritionist and dietician at the center, said the expo is a great resource for the community.

“When you exercise and are active and healthy, you just feel better,” Hinderliter said.

“We’re making it so that people are aware of that.”
