New Franklin Street breakfast venue opened Thursday

The long-awaited Waffle House on Franklin Street is now open for business.

The long-awaited Waffle House on Franklin Street is now open for business.

Waffle House opened its doors to customers Thursday, adding to the mix of eateries in downtown Chapel Hill.

The 24-hour breakfast restaurant, located at 129 E. Franklin St., received a warm welcome from the community, Waffle House regional manager An-Twan Gaines said.

“The opening is going as well as expected,” Gaines said. “We’ve had a lot of great feedback and everyone has been happy to have us (in Chapel Hill), so we’re very happy to be there.”

Gaines said he thinks the restaurant will add variety to the downtown area, making the long wait for opening day worthwhile.

“We’ve been working hand-in-hand with the construction partner for the last six months getting this store ready,” he said. “It’s been a long time coming, but we’re very excited to open it. We think it will add a lot of value to downtown and give people different options than they traditionally have.”

Adam Sutter, 17, of Chapel Hill said he decided to try out the new Waffle House as soon as he heard it was open, and that he was excited to have a new dining option in town.

“It’s a lot nicer than the (Waffle House) in Durham,” Sutter said. “The waffles are really good and this one is a lot closer to where I live.”

Other patrons also said they were pleased with the service and cleanliness of the new restaurant. Sherdina Morrison of Chapel Hill said she likes the feel of Chapel Hill’s Waffle House better than others she has visited.

“This one is better than all the other Waffle Houses,” she said. “The employees are great — really nice.”

Michelle Farrington, a Chapel Hill resident, said she thinks the 24-hour aspect of the restaurant will be particularly popular with students.

“They have great food, great people, and a great staff,” she said. “They’ll stay busy.”
