The former chair of the recently renamed Department of African and Afro-American Studies Julius Nyang’oro made his first appearance in Superior Court Tuesday.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office turned over discovery materials to Nyang’oro’s attorney Tuesday, according to District Attorney Jim Woodall.

Nyang’oro was indicted by a grand jury last month for obtaining $12,000 worth of property under false pretenses. Nyang’oro’s attorney Bill Thomas said Nyang’oro will plead not guilty to that charge.
Nyang’oro taught AFAM 280: Blacks in North Carolina in 2011. The class, which comprised only student athletes, never met.

Nyang’oro will appear in court again Apr. 29, Woodall said. He said it is possible the appearance date may be moved up slightly.
