A man was killed by a falling tree during Wednesday’s thunderstorms at a home on Roper Lane near Chapel Hill.

William Randolph Morris, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene after a tree fell on him while he was standing on the back deck of a residence at 106 Roper Lane, according to a press release from Chapel Hill Police.

Chapel Hill Police responded to the incident around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.

UNC student Xuezhou Nan was killed by a falling tree during a thunderstorm last June.

The N.C. Department of Transportation is still picking up storm debris from the heavy rains that hit the county last week. The county asked residents to be patient while the department formulates a plan to best gather the debris.
