UNC women's tennis prepares for trip to Athens

With 13 combined men's and women's championships, the courts in Athens, home to the Georgia Bulldogs, have seen their fair share of great tennis.

The seventh-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team will be looking to create their own history in Athens as they try to make a deep run in the tournament.

"Athens is a great venue to host an NCAA championship," coach Brian Kalbas said. "I'm really excited."

The Tar Heels qualified for Athens after two dominating 4-0 victories over Virginia Commonwealth and Georgia State last Friday and Saturday in Chapel Hill.

Freshman Hayley Carter and junior Caroline Price look to build off of strong performances in the opening rounds of the tournament.

Carter controlled both of her matches, losing just four games in two days and is eager to prove herself in Georgia.

"I'm so excited," Carter said. "I'm a freshman, so I've been hearing about Athens forever since I was a little girl growing up."

The Tar Heels have their work cut out for them, facing a tough Texas A&M team that beat the Tar Heels 4-3 back in February.

The ninth-ranked Aggies will be a challenge for the Tar Heels, but the team remains upbeat about the prospect of heading to Georgia.

"I'm so excited to experience it and I can't wait to see what we can do," Carter said.
