Recap of the fourth GOP presidential debate for the 2016 election

Eight Republican candidates met in Milwaukee for their fourth presidential debate. This will be the last debate until after the holiday season.

Ted Cruz

  • On immigration: “If the GOP join Democrats as a party of amnesty, we will lose. “
  • Advocated increasing military spending and reducing subsidies in a spat with Rand Paul because the United States must maintain a strong military.

Rand Paul

  • On government spending and regulation: "I want a government really, really small, so small you can barely see it."
  • Advocated cutting the military budget as well as other government programs: “I’m the only fiscal conservative on this stage.”

Carly Fiorina

  • On the economy: "The secret sauce of America is innovation and entrepreneurship."
  • Argued government regulation allows big banks to flourish at the expense of the middle class.

Donald Trump

  • On economic and foreign policy: “We are a country that is being beaten on every front economically, militarily... We don’t win anymore.”
  • Justified his often-considered harsh views on immigration by saying that as a nation of laws, the United States must control its borders.
  • On criticisms from fellow candidate John Kasich: “I built a company worth billions of dollars, I don't need to hear from this man."

Marco Rubio

  • On industry: “We need more welders and fewer philosophers.”
  • While arguing with Rand Paul over fiscal conservatism, claimed the world can only be a safe place with America leading it.
  • GOP needs to revisit immigration stance because it is losing potential voters to Hillary Clinton

Jeb Bush

  • On foreign policy: "We can no longer be the world's policeman, but we should be the world's leader."
  • Criticized Trump for treating foreign policy “like a board game”
  • On partisan politics: We don't need an "agitator-in-chief"

John Kasich

  • Was aggressive throughout the debate in criticizing the other candidates for lack of planning and government experience.
  • Fought with Trump on illegal immigrants: “We all know you can't pick them up and ship them back across the border.”

Ben Carson

  • Carson said he had no problems with being vetted, he just felt he was being lied about by the other candidates and the media.
  • On ISIS: “We need to make them look like losers.” He said we are losing ground in the Middle East because we do not have a strong enough militarily.
