Explosive first inning propels UNC baseball to victory over Catamounts

It was over nearly before it started.

As per usual this season, the No. 7 North Carolina baseball team scored early and often in Tuesday's 10-2 win over Western Carolina at Boshamer Stadium, scoring four runs in the first inning to bury the Catamounts (9-11).

With the bases loaded early in the opening frame, UNC (18-2) plated a run on four consecutive plate appearances — capped off by an RBI single from first-year Brandon Riley.

After batting around in the first inning, North Carolina went hitless in the following frame. But the Tar Heels still found unconventional ways to extend their lead, as sophomore Brian Miller converted a hit-by-pitch and throwing error by Western Carolina into a scoring opportunity.

In the third inning, Riley returned to the action, drilling a deep triple to right field to give UNC a six-run cushion.

And two innings later, it was Riley who crossed home plate — courtesy of a Zack Gahagan home run over the left-field wall. The Tar Heels would add two more runs in the later innings to strengthen their stranglehold over the Catamounts, who graced the scoreboard with a two-run home run in the ninth inning.

But North Carolina hardly needed any insurance runs on Tuesday.

Sophomore pitcher Hunter Williams threw five shutout innings in his first start of the season, lowering his season ERA to 0.64. The lefty allowed just two hits and kept Western Carolina from reaching third base while he patrolled the mound.

Quotable

"I've never seen four infield hits in one inning before. ... It was just kind of luck. We just hit the ball where they weren't, and they didn't make plays." — Coach Mike Fox on his team's scoring success in the first inning.

Notable

After earning ACC Co-Player of the Week honors on Monday, junior Tyler Ramirez prepared an encore on Tuesday. The center fielder recorded two hits and two runs in three at-bats, including a single in the first inning to load the bases and spark UNC's scoring outbreak.

Three numbers that matter

13: The Tar Heels are 13-0 this season when scoring in the first inning. North Carolina won 13 such games in 18 attempts during the 2015 season.

32: After entering the game tied with Ramirez for the team-high total in hits, Miller added three more on Tuesday to take sole possession of the lead with 32 hits. Miller totaled 38 hits in 52 games a season ago.

7: In his first start of the season, Williams registered seven strikeouts to push his season total to 17. The sophomore struggled with his command early — hitting a batter in each of the first three innings — but the lefty regained his composure on the mound with every subsequent strikeout.

What's next?

The Tar Heels open a three-game home series with Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Boshamer Stadium.
