Letter: A poem on campus safe spaces argument

TO THE EDITOR:

Where’s my safe space?

It’s not necessary to hide from problems with race.

You are not a special case.

If you are insulted to your face,

Don’t run away and cry.

Instead ask, “Why?”

Our campus climate is still segregated.

No more is this regulated,

But rather created

By foolish ideals of self-segregation

That recently have plagued our nation.

If you disagree,

Why is it you versus me?

Why can’t we be free

To disagree politically

And enjoy each other socially?

Next time you protest in the Pit

Or think, “My God, you’re full of s**t!”

Why not ask that person directly,

“Let’s have lunch. Where can we sit?”

If you feel a need for a safe space,

Please look instead for a public place

Where you can discuss the opposing view

Not me versus you, but me with you.

And you may find your safe space

In your new friend’s face.
