Rough first day sinks UNC men's golf in ACC Championship

After a regular season that included seven top-five finishes, the North Carolina men’s golf team came into the ACC Championship with high expectations.

But the Tar Heels were unable to live up to these expectations, finishing tied with Virginia for eighth out of 12 teams at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C.

Despite improved play on the competition’s second and third days, a 7-over-par on Friday proved to be too big of a deficit for UNC, which finished 6-over-par for the weekend.

“(It was) pretty bad; we didn’t play well in the first round,” Coach Andrew Sapp said. “Might have been nerves, might have been bad ball striking.”

“We got off to a bad start on the first four holes, which are kind of the easier holes on the golf course. You have to attack those early, and we went the opposite direction and just couldn’t catch up.”

None of North Carolina’s five golfers shot under par in the first round, as the team recorded a 295 and sat in ninth place after Friday.

Junior Carter Jenkins had the team's best performance on the day, finishing with an even par score of 72 to tie for 18th place.

Spurred on by sophomore William Register’s four birdies, UNC improved its score by two strokes on the tournament’s second day.

Register finished 3-under-par on Saturday, but the sophomore was the only golfer to succesfully chip away at his team's deficit. He was the only Tar Heel to finish under par.

Heading into Sunday, North Carolina found itself sitting in ninth place at 12-over-par. But the Tar Heels mounted a furious comeback on the tournament’s final day, scoring a much improved 6-under-par to match Clemson for the best performance of any team.

Jenkins led the way with a 5-under-par, carding five birdies without a bogey in his final nine holes. Sophomore Ben Griffin also had a strong day, as he recorded five birdies en route to a 2-under-par.

Junior Henry Do finished with an even par, and first-year Joshua Martin finished 1-over-par on Sunday to round out UNC’s impressive outing.

Despite the strong play, the Tar Heels still found themselves near the bottom of the leaderboard at the end of the day. UNC’s 6-over-par performance for the weekend netted it a tie for eighth place — 31 shots behind champion Clemson.

“We played really well today, but we needed a few rounds like today to be competitive,” said Sapp on Sunday. “Really, we shot ourselves in the foot in the first round, and that is pretty much what caused us to be tied for eighth.”

Jenkins' score of 2-under-par for the weekend earned him a tie for 13th place. Register also recorded a top-20 finish, as his even par score left him tied for 16th place.

As the postseason progresses, the Tar Heels will need to consistently play like they did on the tournament's final day to find success.

“Sunday is hopefully a momentum-builder moving towards the NCAA Regionals in a few weeks,” Sapp said.

“We ended on a positive note — we just started out flat.”
