Power outages span across Chapel Hill following a severe thunderstorm

Power outages and downed trees are being reported across Orange County following an afternoon thunderstorm.

Nearly 3,000 homes are without power, Orange County Emergency Services tweeted Thursday afternoon. Among those without power is the Chapel Hill Library, which announced its closure shortly before 4 p.m.

A downed tree on East Franklin Street and Plant Road caused a power outage at the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation administrative offices, Community Clay Studio and the Chapel Hill Community Center. Programs at the facilities are cancelled until further notice, the Town of Chapel Hill tweeted.

The Chapel Hill Police Department headquarters is currently without phone service.

"Emergency calls utilize 9-1-1," Chapel Hill Police said in a tweet. "Non-emergency calls, including parking inquiries, please wait for power to be restored."

This is a developing story. Check back here for updates.
