Fourth-year student Diamond Mon’Ae Daniels was shot and killed in Southampton County, Virginia, on Sunday, July 7.
She was 20 years old, active in gospel choir and came to UNC after getting an associates degree at a Virginia community college.
Daniels was majoring in psychology and exercise and sport science.
Issac O’neal Taylor, her stepbrother, turned himself in to the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office following the shooting, news reports said.
“Affectionately called ‘Sunshine’, Diamond enjoyed serving others, fishing, dance, writing, painting and exercising," the obituary for Daniels said. "It was evident in the way that she tried new things, played with children and bonded with family. She enjoyed playing volleyball, but had a life-long passion for softball."
A celebration of life will be held at the Greensville County Elementary School in Emporia, Virginia, on Saturday July 13, at 2:00 p.m. Flowers can be sent via the obituary website.
