UNC softball picks up another win with 5-0 triumph over Virginia

UNC junior pitcher Hannah George (42) fields a grounder in Anderson Softball Stadium in Chapel Hill, NC on Feb. 20, 2021. The Syracuse Orange beat the Tar Heels 3-2.

The North Carolina softball team (3-0) defeated ACC opponent Virginia (2-3), 5-0, in the third game of the weekend Carolina Classic.

What happened?

UNC took an early 1-0 first-inning lead when graduate transfer shortstop Sara Jubas drove in junior infielder Destiny Middleton for a run.

The game became a defensive struggle after the first inning. Senior pitcher Hannah George and senior catcher Taylor Greene spearheaded the Tar Heels’ defensive stand throughout the next five innings, as the Cavaliers remained unable to get on the board.

UNC, however, also had its own struggles offensively, as the Tar Heels registered only one hit after the first inning. But that changed in the fifth inning, as UNC put together three hits and two runs to extend its lead to 3-0 heading into the sixth inning.

The Tar Heels rode their offensive momentum into the sixth inning and extended their lead to 5-0 by scoring two more runs off one hit and capitalizing on Virginia miscues.

In the seventh inning, sophomore pitcher Talia Hannappel stepped in for George to pitch her first full inning of the game, and she shut the door on any chance of a late-game comeback for Virginia by striking out one batter and allowing zero hits to seal the 5-0 win for the Tar Heels.

Who stood out?

The North Carolina pitchers made the presence felt in this game. In its first four games this season, Virginia has averaged just under five runs per game, with an impressive six-run game against George Washington. George and Hannappel led the Tar Heels effort that shutout the Cavaliers and held them to just four hits all game. George recorded four strikeouts while Hannappel contributed two.

Greene also played a significant role in the Tar Heels’ shutout of Virginia, making a team-high seven putouts. At bat, Greene had one hit, run and RBI in UNC’s 5-0 victory.

When was it decided?

This game wasn’t decided until late, when UNC scored four unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put itself ahead 5-0 heading into the seventh inning. The victory was all but sealed with a five-run advantage in the seventh inning and with the fresh arm of Hannappel coming in to close out the game on the mound.

Why does it matter?

Although it’s still early in the season, this win maintains UNC’s perfect record and gives the Tar Heels a victory against a conference opponent. The dominance of the win indicates that UNC may be more competitive in the ACC than last season, when the Tar Heels won just 10 off their 29 conference games.

Another bright spot from this game is the continued strong play from transfers Jubas and Hannappel. Jubas showed her championship pedigree from her days at James Madison with a two-RBI outing against the Cavaliers, while Hannappel flashed her ability to be an quality pitcher for the Tar Heels after putting together a small sample of work in four games as a member of New Mexico.

When do they play next?

The Tar Heels next game is against South Carolina at 3:30 p.m. in UNC’s fourth and final game of the Carolina Classic.
