Wednesday Roundup (5/25 to 6/1): The Culture isn't Shocking Edition

Sacred Arts Tour 2011

A group of monks from Drepung Gomang Monastery arrived in Chapel Hill on May 21. They will be in the area until June 4. Originally from China, the monks are on tour in efforts to promote understanding and interfaith dialogue.

The monks will hold their culture pageant which will feature The Good Luck Dance and The Snow Lion Dance.

The monks will host their mandala deconstruction ceremony in the afternoon.

In addition to the events, the monks will be hosting workshops throughout the weekend for both sand painting and making butter sculptures. The events are open on a registration basis with suggested donations of $15. All proceeds directly support roughly 2000 refugee monks from the monastery located in Southern India.

Touchstones Showcase Poetry Open Mic

The monthly open mic session held by Sacrificial Poets is back once again. This time the event features Poetic Portraits of a Revolution, four young men embarking to the Middle East in order to document the stories of the movements taking place.

Triangle Jazz Orchestra Open Rehearsal

June is fast-approaching, and with it comes a bit of jazz. The 17-piece Triangle Jazz Orchestra holds an open rehearsal the first Wednesday of each month. Music ranges from the likes of Duke Ellington to more contemporary stylists in jazz through the roughly 2-hour set. There will be space for visitors to dance, as well.

Adding to the Mix I: John Wesley’s Boeing (1982) is the museum’s latest exhibition that focuses on the recently acquired work in Boeing (1982). It is part of an informal series that is set to place recent museum acquisitions within the context of pieces that are already a part of the Ackland’s collection.
