The Movie Trail for October 12

Although the teaser was released only a short time ago, the full theatrical trailer for “True Grit” is already up. Initially just a more expansive look at the content of the movie, things really get going once Johnny Cash’s wholly appropriate “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” kicks in. This trailer only reinforces my opinion that Jeff Bridges was the perfect choice to play Cogburn, and it’s always nice to get a better look at gorgeous cinematography of Roger Deakins. Expect this to be a major contender at awards season this year.
The trailer for the bitter relationship drama “Blue Valentine” is now up, fresh off of receiving a NC-17 rating from the MPAA. The rating apparently stems from one scene of drunken, contemptuous sex, but of course none of that appears in this quite tame trailer. The movie centers on a couple (Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams) whose marriage is quickly collapsing. Billed as “an honest portrait of a relationship on the rocks” and receiving rave reviews at Sundance, the trailer actually avoids any corny romantic clichés, and makes its pretty depressing subject matter look very compelling.

Lest you think “The Movie Trail” is all about righteous retribution and failed relationships, here’s the red band trailer for a movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Fresh out of the joint, Driver (Johnson) is out to kill those responsible for his brother’s death, while evading a hitman and Billy Bob Thornton. Basically, it has all the themes of “True Grit,” but with none of the gravitas and a lot more slow motion. All in all, the trailer seems to indicate it will be a fairly entertaining, if entirely by-the-numbers, revenge film with violence of mind-numbing proportions. And we all need some of that from time to time. –
