The Movie Trail: October 26, 2010

Wes Craven’s “Scream” series has always been applauded for at least having a touch of self-awareness about itself and the state of movies. In the wake of the failure that was “My Soul to Take,” he seems to have decided to go for broke and saturate “Scream 4” with every bit of self-referencing material he can put together. To be fair, the trailer makes some accurate points about audience obsessions with gory, realistic kills and the borderline voyeuristic filming style of a lot of horror films, but anyone who has seen the “Saw” movies could have told me that. The trailer does have some funny lines about the “new rules” of slasher movies, so check out the meta-horror trailer below.

Liam Neeson stopped at nothing to get his daughter back, and “Unknown” proves he’ll go to any length to recover his memory as well. After going into a coma following a car crash, Neeson’s Dr. Martin Harris awakes to find he not only has amnesia, but his wife no longer recognizes him and another man has assumed his identity. He soon uncovers a vast conspiracy and sets out to bash some skulls in and regain his life. Perhaps Neeson will also discover why an educated doctor is also so proficient in unarmed combat.

I confess that I no longer care about exorcism movies; in fact, I can’t actually think of anyone who does. I don’t actually know anyone who saw a movie like “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” but it apparently still made $140 million. Despite my apathy, the trailer for “The Rite” is here, featuring the supposedly true tale of a Vatican-trained exorcist and his experiences with demons. It has Anthony Hopkins too, but it looks like it will feature the same possessed, contorted people and their vaguely evil mumblings. In short, it’s nothing special. But if you’re one of the millions of people other than me who will pay to see that sort of thing, check it out.
