Movie Review: Chasing Mavericks

“Chasing Mavericks” ripples through the hearts of audiences everywhere. It is an inspirational film for all who see it.

Based on a true story, “Chasing Mavericks” is the tale of Jay Moriarity (Jonny Weston) and his desire to become an exceptional surfer.

Taking place in Santa Cruz, Calif., Jay finds the Mavericks, legendary waves that are deemed almost impossible to surf. In addition, he learns that the man who once saved him from drowning as a child is able to ride the impossible waves.

With his new discovery, Jay asks Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler) to train him in the ways of surfing. After much persistence from the teenager, Hesson begrudgingly agrees and so begins the quest for unmatched skill.

Jay is forced to go through intense training hindered by his pothead best friend, a horrendous mother and the girl of his dreams, who won’t talk to him in any public setting. The daring teenager has to learn how to handle the vigorous process of becoming a surfer alongside school and his job at the local pizza parlor.

Gerard Butler does a brilliant job as a hardened man who experiences what it means to settle down even though he never loses his innate skills and passion to surf.

The movie is great to watch if anyone has the intention to come out light-hearted and filled with happiness. “Chasing Mavericks” is a film that instills a desire in viewers to pick up a board and surf their way into history.
