TV Review: The Walking Dead

What is it about “The Walking Dead” that has everyone obsessed? Is it our culture’s new obsession with post-apocalyptic survival? Are zombies the new vampires?

If there is one thing I know for certain it’s this: if you are not watching this show you either don’t have a television or you don’t know what you are missing.

This show has it all. It has the drama. It has the memorable characters. It has the violence.

Many shows can lose steam after a few seasons but this show is just getting started. Rick Grimes, the head of the pack, is leading a group of survivors including son Carl, the fan-favorite Daryl Dixon, the quick-thinking Glenn, along with Hershel Greene and his two daughters. After moving around quite a bit in the surrounding Atlanta area, the group is settled in a vacated prison. However, they have now provoked the Governor, the sinister and disturbed villain who heads the town of Woodbury.

In last night’s episode, Rick is continuing to hallucinate visions of his dead wife Lori. If you didn’t already know, Lori died earlier in the season while giving birth to daughter Judith during a zombie raid. The majority of the group believes he has lost his marbles and there are rumblings of someone else replacing him as leader.

Daryl and brother Merle split from the group in the previous episode so they had lots of brother bonding time. Merle is still pretty angry with Daryl and the group for leaving him to die handcuffed on the roof of a building (he survived by cutting off his own hand).

The relationship between Daryl and Merle is one I definitely want to see developed over the rest of the season. They both have their own reasons for being angry with each other yet they know they are the only true family they have left. Family trumps all.

The most exciting scene of the night came from the Governor as he initiated war with Rick and the group. One of the newest members of the group and a former prisoner was shot in the head mid-sentence by the Governor. I didn’t see that coming.

An intense firefight commenced and the Governor unleashed a truck full of walkers onto the prison scene. Rick was almost lunch to multitudes of zombies but was saved by Daryl. Whew.

I love how this show moves the plot in unexpected ways, most of the time I’m just stunned at the end. This war between Rick and the Governor is no exception. It’s about to get ugly and we will probably lose more characters but I can’t wait to watch it unfold.
