When R&B artist Marvin Gaye recorded his 11th album, U.S. anti-communist efforts in Vietnam were nearing their 16th year. Almost 13,500 people were arrested during the May Day protests in Washington, D.C., and the Pentagon Papers, published by the New York Times, sowed incorrigible doubt in the U.S. mission in Vietnam.
All of the sudden, there is increased dialogue about the lack of minorities in study abroad programs across the nation. While many are taken aback by what the numbers say, history tells us this isn’t a new phenomenon.
While giving a campus tour last month, I noticed an elderly woman accompanying her grandson on a visit of the school. She was in the back of the group, eyes fixated on my mouth and the words I spoke. She didn’t talk or ask ridiculous questions. She just walked along quietly whispering to her grandson every now and then.
