The Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA will hold a Zumba Dance Benefit on Friday, Jan. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is a fantastic opportunity for folks in the community to experience the YMCA while supporting a grand cause with two hours of Zumba workout.

This Saturday, Carolina Creates will host the first annual TEDxUNC conference from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Due to high student demand, we are organizing a series of viewing parties across campus for students wishing to watch, discuss and enjoy the event with their peers. I guess if we just keep badgering the Chapel Hill Town Council, then maybe they will give in to the alleged “many” who do not support the police action taken at the breaking and entering of Yates Motor Company. I contend that “many” people believe that the police action was appropriate based on the circumstances. You have to understand, “most” of us law abiding citizens would not break into private property.

I write because of the SWAT team deployed at the former Yates Motor Company building on Nov. 13. But I also write because of a greater trend across this country of increasing militarization of law enforcement post-9/11; of police brutality and excessive use of force.

This past fall, the DTH ran a few stories, editorials and letters to the editor discussing the sustainable food movement on campus. In particular, there was attention paid to the “Real Food Challenge Campus Commitment”. Unfortunately, some of the dialogue about the commitment misrepresented a few crucial aspects.

The Order of the Golden Fleece is accepting nominations through 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16.
Founded in 1904, the Order of the Golden Fleece is the University’s highest honorary society. Members are selected based upon service to the University as reflected in scholarship, motivation, creativity, loyalty and leadership in academic and extracurricular pursuits.

When I logged on to the Student Stores website to see what books I needed to buy for my classes, I was delighted to see that there really weren’t that many books I needed to purchase. Most of them could be purchased from Amazon for a fraction of the price and shipped to my dorm room for free.
However, many of my classes included a dreaded new form of academic waste: clickers. Now, I could understand if the University had a standardized system, requiring the purchase of one clicker that could be used in all classes. This is, unsurprisingly, how other top-tier universities operate.
