Mayors from the N.C. Metropolitan Coalition met Wednesday and Thursday in Chapel Hill to discuss statewide climate change and transportation issues.
Raising awareness of global warming and reducing carbon emissions from public transportation were key components to the conference.
"We had mayors from 16 cities over two days," Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy said.
The mayors each brought a perspective unique to their town's geographical location in the state.
Municipal governments are now leading the green charge to attack the problem of global warming in spite of the federal government's defaulted efforts, said Fred Profeta Jr., chairman of the New Jersey State League of Municipalities and mayor of Maplewood, N.J.
"It is much easier to motivate people at the local level," Profeta said.
Foy said that on Wednesday the coalition heard from Charlotte's Mayor Pat McCrory, who emphasized the environmental and logistical benefits of the light rail service that Charlotte recently opened.
Energy conservation holds the key to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions, said Allen Joines, the N.C. Metropolitan Coalition Chairman and mayor of Winston Salem.
"If we can save more energy, then we will have fewer energy costs and less emissions," Joines said.
Chapel Hill is the first U.S. municipality to commit to a 60 percent carbon emissions reduction by 2050, through the Community Carbon Reduction Project.
The coalition plans to meet again at a later date in Salisbury at the Center for the Environment on the campus of Catawba College to further discuss possible legislation to strengthen the environment and fight global warming.

10. Seth Kauffman, Research (Park The Van)
For the entirety of Research, Seth Kauffman rides a loose, funky groove built with ramshackle percussion, vintage R&B melodies, and arrangements borrowing from rockabilly and blues.
It's a remarkably singular effort, especially considering it borrows elements from so much.
The album's lo-fi production aesthetic augments Kauffman's mid-range moan and lends the record an air of timelessness made more profound by the subtle charm that comes with Kauffman's consistently engaging songcraft.

Three of the band's five members sat down with Assistant Diversions Editor Jamie Williams before they rock Local 506 tonight with their rainbow-bright-and-paisley brand of pop-rock.

Album from the Vaults:
Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ: The Boss' debut from back when he was still just some punk kid - or the new Dylan, depending on who you asked - proves that there was, in fact, life before Born to Run.
Movie Rental Pick:
"Paris, Je T'aime:" This overlooked film from 2007 is crafted with as much love for the City of Lights as for the art of cinema.

It doesn't take a whole lot of reasoning to realize Bull City is a band from Durham.
It is the type of band that likes its rock music with just a hint of twang, amazing hooks and guitar chops to spare.
In advance of tonight's show at Local 506, Assistant Diversions Editor Jamie Williams caught up with Bull City's guitarist/vocalist Jim Brantley to chat about guitars, what goes into a good band name and a little baseball for good measure.

Tender Forever
Wider
Twee Pop
4.5 stars
Listening to Wider is like looking someone you love squarely in the eye, staring at her fully aware of her flaws, and still being able to smile because none of them really matter.
Essentially, it is a record about falling in love, with Melanie Valera's sweet vocals and laptop beats providing the score.
For the French-born Valera, aka Tender Forever, the beginning of love is just as scary as the end, but she gets through with confessions about her insecurities and how they disappear around her new lover.
