Thousands of local newspapers have turned into ghosts of their former selves, according to a new study from UNC's Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media at the School of Media and Journalism. The study defines these 'ghost newspapers' as having diminished quality, quantity and scope of their editorial content.

UNC-Chapel Hill has been ranked 30th in the world in the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, moving up three slots from last year's 33rd-place ranking. Out of public universities in the United States, UNC is ranked ninth.

Beginning next fall, the eight black fraternities and sororities that comprise the National Pan-Hellenic Council at UNC will have housing in Ram Village Apartments. Previously, NPHC chapters didn't have official on-campus housing.

Upon evaluating my recent first-year experience at UNC, I recall the scorching hot day of move-in, the first day Old Well sip, never-ending trips to Lenoir Dining Hall and hilarious dorm adventures. I think about the string of social events that make college life so memorable and exciting. I don’t often think about days on end of instant Ramen meals, checking my bank account to see if I can afford to splurge on a dinner trip to Franklin and general unease about if the price of college is worth the immense debt it attaches to my name.

Protesters from the North Carolina Poor People’s Campaign took to the streets of downtown Raleigh today, blocking traffic and calling on lawmakers to address the issue of poverty, focusing especially on women, children and people with disabilities. At the height of the event, police gave citations to around 50 people for impeding the flow of traffic on Jones Street.

Maya Little was arrested for painting the Confederate memorial Silent Sam red with paint and her own blood at a protest Monday. She was charged with defacement of a public monument and will have her first court date on May 7. To empower survivors of rape and sexual assault, the Student Safety and Wellness Committee of the Undergraduate Student Government Executive Branch hosted a Take Back the Night march on Wednesday evening. Around 20 students marched across campus and Franklin Street to bring awareness to the sexual violence against women, men and non-binary individuals by men.
