"We are Burmese people ... from every part of nearby the Chapel Hill area," said protester Win Thein Naing at a demonstration on March 6, 2021.
"We're trying to get our voices heard throughout Chapel Hill," said Sofia Thein, pictured with her mother on March 6, 2021. "We're here to protest and let the world know that we support our people back there."
Protesters gathered in Chapel Hill's Justice Plaza to stand against the military coup in Burma on March 6, 2021. "Freedom, democracy, justice – Myanmar must be free," chanted protesters in multiple languages.
Protesters held signs expressing their disappointment with the military coup during a demonstration in Chapel Hill on March 6, 2021. Several advocated for restoring the power of those elected in the 2020 Myanmar election.
Around sixty people have been wrongfully killed at anti-coup protests in Myanmar, said protester Win Thein Naing. "Burmese people are not allowed to own guns, ... police and soldiers only have a gun and they just start shooting ... protesters."
Aung San Suu Kyi, pictured in this protester's poster, won the general election in Myanmar in November 2020. The military of Myanmar declared the election results to be fraudulent and arrested Aung San Suu Kyi in early February 2021, said protester Win Thein Naing on March 6, 2021.
