Sridhar Balasubramanian, marketing professor and associate Dean for the MBA program was named one of the 50 best business professors in the world. He said he thinks about teaching as "helping shape eager minds." He emphasized that teaching is three fold; students learn from teachers, students learn from each other, and sometimes teachers learn from students. He also said, "Everyone can be innovative." And innovation includes motivation, opportunity, and ability.

The Hargraves Community Center in Chapel Hill held the 6th annual Project Connect Orange County on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Project Connect provided people experiencing--or at risk of experiencing-- homelessness with many services including housing, employment, health and dental treatment, mental health care, veterans' and social service benefits, legal services, and more.

Joy Renner, Committee Chair, lead the meeting
The second meeting of the Faculty Athletic Committee met on Tuesday afternoon at South Building. The committee discussed the relationships between student athletes and their academics. "We have a collective responsibility to care of athletics on campus," said Chancellor Holden Thorp.
Athletic Director, Bubba Cunningham, also gave updates on athletics.
The committee discussed the role of the committee in regards to student athlete's academic success. "It needs to be sustainable," said Joy Renner, Chair of the committee.
John Stephens, Glynis Cowell, and Vince Ille spoke about what can be done to improve student athlete's academic experience.

Several students waited in line inside the Great Hall of the Student Union on Tuesday morning to get tickets to see J. Cole perform at UNC on November 4th. Students started lining up at around 7 a.m. and the tickets were handed out at noon.
Shayla Nasiri (left), junior, Political Science and Religious Studies major, waits in line with her friend Morgan Markham (right), junior Psychology and Global Studies major. "It's going to be definitely worth it," Shayla said. Shayla got to the Union at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. The girls said that when they found out J. Cole coming they were like "we have to go" because he is from Fayettville and went to their High School.

Loren Shealy is a Robertson Scholar field hockey player who is going to Duke in the spring but will still play for UNC. She said that the team is really exciting about their game against Duke tomorrow. "I'm excited to take classes there in the spring- it's a great university- and we are big rivals but when I hit the field it's all Carolina," Loren said. "It will be a great learning experience," she said.

Chancellor Holden Thorp spoke about his announcement to resign. "It was the hardest decision of my life," he said. He confirmed that he was not asked to resign. Several faculty members talked about how they do not want Thorp to leave and that he is the best person for the job.
Sue (last name?) said that we need to make this a place where Thorp wants to be. "We haven't done our part"
Jane (?) wants to disagree with the notion that a former faculty member is not up to the job of being chancellor.
Other faculty members talked about how much Thorp has done for the faculty so far and his understanding of all aspects of this University.

UNC students tutor kids in the basement of the post office on Franklin Street. This free tutoring and after-school hang out is open from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. This started out as a safe haven for kids. One of the volunteers, Cameron Bynum, freshmen, Political Science major, said "I stuck with this community because I wanted to be able to help kids at these crucial ages."

Temple University Professor Richard Immerman spoke at the U.S. in World Affairs: the Cold War and Beyond series. During his "Covert Operations, Intelligence analysis, and the Making of the CIA: A Dynamic for Failure" lecture, Professor Immerman discussed several aspects of the CIA including its evolution since its inception. He said that some of the problems in the CIA are "not impervious to reform."

Amber Holt, freshman pre-med major from Lillington, North Carolina, moved into her room in Hinton James on Saturday afternoon. She thought the most stressful part of moving in was getting stuff back and forth and only having a limited time to park at the dorm. She is excited about meeting people, getting used to the campus, and it will be her first year away from home. "It will be the first time I will be living by myself and my mom and I are really close. I'm excited and nervous at the same time; it's mixed feelings," Amber said.

Caitlin Fisher, Canada Research Chair in Digital Culture and Director of the Augmented Reality Lab at York University gave a lecture entitled "Building small worlds" Tuesday evening in Hyde Hall. Augmented reality involves overlaying digital images on the real world. "Augmented reality is a magical technology where the rules haven't been written yet. Augmented reality is important because it uses digital tools but the real world still matters," Caitlin said. During the lecture she showed clips of various projects that she and her students have done and talked about projects that they are currently working on. She emphasized the potential for augmented reality in relation to other academic disciplines and the importance of having creative people who have stories to tell.
