UNC reports a 31 percent COVID-19 positivity rate for last week

The University reported a 31.3 percent positivity rate of COVID-19 tests last week — more than double the 13.6 percent positivity rate from the first week of class.

NCAA to give extra year of eligibility to fall sports athletes

In late March, the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to spring sports athletes, citing cancellations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with the fate of college sports for the remainder of 2020 looking murkier by the day, the NCAA hopes to remove some level of uncertainty for its fall sports athletes.

Schools across North Carolina, including NC State, ECU and UNC-Charlotte in addition to UNC-Chapel Hill are publishing their university's COVID-19 data in various formats.

UNC-Chapel Hill reported 135 new cases of COVID-19 one week after the first day of classes and pivoted to remote instruction. But other schools in the UNC System are staying the course. Here's the COVID-19 situation at some other schools in the UNC System. East Carolina University reported 29 new positive tests last week.  North Carolina State University reported 28 new daily cases as of Aug. 18.  The Orange County coronavirus data show 1,562 total COVID-19 cases and 49 deaths since mid-March. 


University reports new clusters at Morrison and Zeta Psi as students move out

Two new COVID-19 clusters were reported by an Alert Carolina message Wednesday — one at Morrison Residence Hall and one at Zeta Psi fraternity house. Zeta Psi was cited on Aug. 8 for loud partying and a mass gathering violation. These are the fifth and sixth clusters reported by the University since UNC reopened for in-person classes. Campus Housing emailed students on Tuesday night, asking that they make plans over the next week to move out of their on-campus housing unless they are unable to do so.
