UNC field hockey earns 4-3 win over Princeton to open ACC-Ivy Challenge

As the clock ticked down in the final period, the Tar Heels earned a penalty corner and the chance to extend their lead. Ashley Sessa inserted the ball and Erin Matson scored the goal to make the score 4-2. Despite a late push by the Tigers, who capitalized on a penalty stroke goal in the final minutes of the game, Princeton couldn't overcome its deficit and erase UNC's lead.

UNC field hockey assistant Caitlin Van Sickle brings renewed defensive focus to her alma mater

Caitlin Van Sickle, a former Tar Heel hired in January as UNC's assistant field hockey coach, used this spring offseason to revitalize the mantra she lived by as a player under head coach Karen Shelton years ago — “Defense wins championships.” Van Sickle isn’t implementing groundbreaking schemes or reinventing the entire UNC defense. Rather, the former U.S. Women’s National Team member is drawing upon her 148 international caps of experience to offer her athletes a fresh perspective.

Jeni Shannon's work with UNC athletes highlights importance of mental health resources

Jeni Shannon, the director of the Carolina Athletics Mental Health and Performance Psychology Program, is one of three full-time providers at UNC pioneering the athletic department’s approach to sports psychology. Shannon, alongside Dr. Brendan Carr and Dr. Bradley Hack, work directly with a number of athletic teams at UNC through sessions, outreach, and programming.
