Analysis: What might conference realignment mean for UNC's Olympic sports?

The potential for conference realignment, driven by increased financial benefits from football and men's basketball TV contacts, would have significant impacts for Olympic sports and local rivalries. If North Carolina chooses to leave the ACC, the program would likely reap the rewards of larger TV deals, and some players could profit from bigger NIL agreements.  Despite this, it will be the athletes who will have to deal with the potential consequences of what comes with realignment — the positive, the negative and the unknown.

UNC graduate thrower Jill Shippee: ACC record-holder and student-athlete advocate

As a star goalkeeper at Shenendehowa High School in Clifton Park, N.Y., UNC track and field star Jill Shippee initially had her sights set on playing soccer in college.  In the fall of 2017, Shippee came into the UNC track and field program as a first-year on the throwing squad. She staked her claim inside the circle instantly.  Now, as a graduate student closing out her last track season as a Tar Heel, Shippee holds the school and ACC women’s hammer throw record of 69.76 meters.

UNC field hockey celebrates their third consecutive national championship on Sunday, May 9 in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels triumphed over the Michigan Wolverines 4-3.

After short offseason, UNC field hockey looks to continue its dominance

Only three months after the UNC field hockey team won its third straight national championship, the team is already looking ahead to continue its streak.  Junior back Madison Orobono, senior forward Erin Matson and junior midfielder Paityn Wirth are representing Team USA in the Junior Pan American Championships, meaning they will miss the rest of UNC’s preseason and opening weekend.  To fill in those gaps, the Tar Heels have welcomed nine new players to the roster.
