Women’s soccer upholds spotless record against Virginia

Saturday was a new chapter in the one-sided series between North Carolina and Virginia and had to involve one of the most interesting plot twists in the 36-chapter history.The ending was no different — UNC was able to pull out a 2-1 victory in front of its home crowd to remain undefeated in the series.

W. Soccer: Heels snatch late ACC win in 88th minute

North Carolina coach Anson Dorrance was trying every combination of players he could think of to crack the Virginia defense.But on Saturday it took a couple of lucky bounces and a pair of arms to secure the 2-1 win for the UNC women’s soccer team.North Carolina (12-1-1), the No. 2 team in the country, tried every trick in the book but was continually thwarted. Through balls, long balls, crosses and corners — nothing penetrated Virginia’s tough and physical defense.

Women's soccer shorthanded against Duke

North Carolina women’s soccer players Meghan Klingenberg and Amanda Tucker entered Wednesday’s practice at Fetzer Field costumed as Blue Devils in preparation for tonight’s match against Duke.While Klingenberg and Tucker will inevitably trade their royal blue ensembles and pitchforks for Carolina blue jerseys, the Tar Heels will still be shorthanded for the rivalry game.

Nearly 82 minutes into the clash between the No. 1 North Carolina women’s soccer team and No. 13 Texas A&M, Tobin Heath found herself in a familiar position.In a scoreless game where both teams were making it hard to even get a shot off, Heath had already seen a potential assist to Casey Nogueira broken up at the last second and a potential assist to Jessica McDonald sail high off McDonald’s foot.But Heath made the same play again, this time paying off as Nikki Washington was able to score the first goal of the game in UNC’s 2-0 win against the Aggies Saturday.

Women’s soccer returns nine starters in ’09

Fresh off a national championship, the class of 2010 women’s soccer team is looking to win their third national championship in their four-year era. Members of the senior class started their time together before freshman year, with conference calls involving 10 of the girls with the intention of bonding before they even moved in for training camp. So far, the class is 71-6-3 over their first three years in Chapel Hill. There’s a great chance that they will be able to build on that already sterling record this season.

Nogueira looks for next step

“Write this down: Casey Nogueira has the potential to be the best women’s soccer player in the world.” When UNC coach Anson Dorrance — the same man who coached women’s soccer greats April Heinrichs, Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly — is saying this immediately after he won his 20th national championship behind the strength of her two goals, that player must be gifted. Six UNC players have won multiple player of the year awards, and Nogueira is looking to become the seventh.
