The North Carolina women’s golf team put together an impressive tournament at the Lady Paladin Invitational in Greenville, S.C., finishing sixth out of 17 teams after Tuesday's third and final round.
After the first round on Sunday, the Tar Heels were in fifth place and within striking distance of ACC foe Clemson. An impressive 1-under-par performance by sophomore Lexi Harkins provided the spark for the UNC lineup.
Harkins and junior Leslie Cloots finished the tournament tied for 14th individually with a three-day total of 6-over-par.
Cloots improved by one shot each day, firing a 75, 74 and 73, while Harkins regressed by three shots each day with a 71, 74 and 77.
Sophomore Bryana Nguyen struggled the first two days, but found her rhythm in the final round and ended the tournament with a 1-under-par performance on Tuesday. She finished tied for 29th — an impressive recovery from her rocky 4-over-par and 5-over-par start.
On the back end of the lineup, first-year Kelly Whaley finished tied for 32nd and senior Elizabeth Mallett finished tied for 39th.
The Tar Heels' lone individual player Rachel Jones tied for 47th.
All six UNC golfers finished inside the top-50 and finished within eight shots of each other.
As a team, UNC carded a three-day total of 890 (297, 297 and 296), which was 19 shots worse than the Missouri Tigers — who spoiled Furman’s hopes of repeating as the champion of its own tournament.
