UNC scores 5 unanswered, leads Stanford at half

Though UNC leads Stanford 5-1 at the half, attacking threat Charlotte Craddock has been shut down. Craddock entered today’s game with six goals in her last (and first) three games for UNC.

But on the left side of the field, UNC has been doing damage without her — four players scored in the first half for the Tar Heels. Three of UNC’s goals have come on backhand shots from left of the cage. Katie Ardrey notched her first goal of the season, and she was credited with the assist on a Loren Shealy goal. UNC took nine shots to Stanford’s three.

The Tar Heels haven’t slouched defensively, either. High-pressing defense has kept Stanford from seeing too much of the ball and resulted in fast-break chances for UNC. The Cardinal has resorted to a high volume of lifted balls in attempts to circumvent UNC’s on-the-ball defense and get out of the backfield.

Kelsey Kolojejchick’s two goals this half helped her tie and then pass Kristen McCann for fifth place on UNC’s all-time goal-scoring list.
