Louisville to join the ACC

The ACC Council of Presidents met early this morning and unanimously voted to accept Louisville as its 14th and newest member to the conference.

The ACC acted quickly to accept a new member after the sudden departure of Maryland last week to the Big Ten.

“The University of Louisville will be a terrific member of the Atlantic Coast Conference,” said University of North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp, chair of the ACC Council of Presidents in a release. “We welcome them as full partners into the ACC.”

Louisville is expected to join the ACC in 2014, and will be the seventh school to leave the Big East in the past year. Louisville is the fourth Big East school to join the ACC in the last year after the conference added Syracuse, Pittsburgh and most recently, Notre Dame. Boston College, Virginia Tech and Miami are also former Big East members.

“The University of Louisville is honored to join the ACC, a conference with a long history of excellence in athletics and academics,” said Dr. James Ramsey, President, University of Louisville in a release. “The ACC will be a great home for UofL and our commitment to great academics, groundbreaking research and top-notch athletic teams.”
