UNC holds 6-4 lead at half against Big Red

After a dominating 17-11 victory against No. 8 Georgetown this weekend, North Carolina’s women’s lacrosse team posted a solid but unremarkable first half of play against No. 10 Cornell in its Wednesday evening matchup.

Kara Cannizzaro recorded the final goal of her first-half hat trick two minutes before halftime to give her team a 6-4 lead after 30 minutes of play.

But at the start, UNC found itself in an uncharacteristic 2-1 hole and struggled to convert early chances on goal. Canizzaro, Taylor George and Brittany Coppa all missed shots that in other games have given UNC more early momentum.

Cornell goalkeeper Courtney Gallagher made seven saves to UNC keeper Lauren Maksym’s one.

But UNC tore off a 4-0 run during a 10-minute span in the middle of the half to take a 5-2 lead. Two more goals from Cornell’s Caroline Salisbury closed the gap to two before halftime.

The Tar Heels took 20 shots to score their six goals, while the Big Red took only six for its four.

Fouls called on Cornell kept the Big Red on the defensive for much of the half. UNC was awarded seven free-position shots. Cornell had zero attempts from free position.
