The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

When Habitat for Humanity of Orange County opened up their new neighborhood in Chapel Hill — Phoenix Place — 14 out of the first 18 families approved for houses were those of UNC employees. These families are currently living in substandard housing in Chapel Hill and bring to the forefront the issue of poverty housing that is much too close to home.

That is why UNC Build a Block — a student-led initiative to build 10 of these houses for 10 of the UNC employee families within the school year — is so important to our community and to our University.

To make this project possible, we need to raise $350,000 and recruit enough volunteer labor to build these houses so that we can directly affect the progress and future of UNC.

You can help right now by buying Carolina Fever’s Old Well Watch T-shirt this week in the Pit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will go toward Build a Block. Also, if you attend the Pep Rally for the N.C. State game (Friday at 8:30 p.m.), not only will you be entertained and fed for hours, but you’ll also be able to learn more about Build a Block and how you can get involved.
