UNC students, faculty protest system President Margaret Spellings

UNC students and faculty held a walkout Tuesday protesting UNC-system President Margaret Spellings' first day on the job. The protest was organized by various organizations, including the UNC-Chapel Hill BOG Democracy Coalition and Faculty Forward. Daily Tar Heel videographer Elaine Zhang captured protesters at the steps of Wilson Library. Sophomore Madeline Ray discusses the support provided by her family. Ray has had six strokes because of an arteriovenous malformation — a tangle of malformed blood vessels and arteries — near the thalamus and hypothalamus of her brain.

Silent Sam Confederate protest

Pro-Confederacy groups from Orange County and Alamance County demonstrated in support of Silent Sam at the base of the Confederate monument Sunday afternoon. Community members protesting the pro-Confederacy groups clashed with the demonstrators. Students, led by Leah Osae, organized a counter-protest outside of Morehead Planetarium.

No longer silent: A profile of a student activist

June Beshea, a senior biology and chemistry major at UNC, is one of the leaders of the Real Silent Sam Coalition, a group of activists who work to dismantle white supremacy. This short documentary examines why Beshea chooses to speak out against racism on campus and what students are doing to express their views.
