Last week, U.S. District Judge Loretta Biggs ruled against the so-called Students for Fair Admissions in its lawsuit alleging that UNC discriminates against white and Asian applicants. This is one of three ongoing suits filed by the organization attacking affirmative action policies, including one against Harvard University that is currently under review by the Supreme Court.

After trying to ensure police accountability and improve campus-community relationships with law enforcement, the UNC Campus Safety Commission has dissolved. However, this should come as no surprise, as the commission was given virtually no authority to make decisions or directly influence campus leadership.

Update: Campus Health has started waiving the $50 weekend charge for COVID-19 testing and care at the beginning of fall semester. However, some students were recently charged in error (if this is the case, they can contact Campus Health Patient Accounts for a refund), according UNC Media Relations.

News broke months ago that acclaimed journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones was initially denied tenure at the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Jones is well-known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning work on The 1619 Project, co-founding the Ida B. Wells society and winning a MacArthur "genius grant."

For the fall 2021 semester, Indiana University announced a vaccine mandate for all students, faculty and staff, becoming one of the first major public universities to do so. Predictably, the mandate was met with mixed reactions. Legal opposition rose to the U.S. Supreme Court, where justice Amy Coney Barrett turned down a group of students' request to block the vaccine mandate.
