Six weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a steamship named City of Atlanta charted a course from New York City to Savannah. As a precautionary measure to avoid the perilous periscopes of enemy U-boats that had already claimed other Atlantic vessels, the ship’s lights were dimmed and the vessel clung close to the shoreline.

The quickly-approaching future for college football this season is grim. Programs nationwide are debating how and whether to move forward, and on Tuesday, the Big Ten and Pac-12 officially postponed their seasons. Given the current state of the virus, hosting stadium games — which would result in players and staff traveling across states and fans congregating to watch their teams — seems like an obvious no-go.

2020 has been a chaotic year — and somehow, it’s still not over yet. Amid questionable reopening plans, reckoning with a legacy of institutional racism and the recent release of sexual assault records after a years-long lawsuit, the role of the opinion page seems more important than ever.

In theory, starting the semester early to keep students from leaving campus for extended breaks may have been a good idea. However, the fact that decision-making regarding COVID-19 protocols has been rushed in the last several weeks to prepare for reopening is extremely detrimental to the well-being of students, staff and faculty at UNC.

With four months and counting since the last live sporting event from the NCAA or any of the United States' five major professional leagues, fans across the country have been made to look at the past rather than the next day's game.

After 93 years, it’s time to change the name of UNC’s football stadium. And by changing it, I mean completely renaming it.

If you’ve ever watched CNN, MSNBC or Fox News before and been bored to tears by the constant repetition of topics and apparent sameness of every distinct program on the network, then you know the feeling of watching ESPN’s daytime television lineup.

"What about Obama?" This question is commonly used to dismiss the reality of systemic racism in America. Although there are numerous reasons this question is flawed, there may be a point there. If there really is pervasive institutional racial bias in America, how could Barack Obama become president of the United States? Before you exit the browser, this isn’t a commentary on Obama’s biracial privilege; this is about the Black privilege that we don’t talk about. It’s about the nuance between African descendants of recent immigrants, like myself, and long-standing African descendants who have struggled in America for five centuries.

We all know that social media is inherently performative. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve “done it for the ‘gram” before, focusing more on curating the way I am perceived than living out experiences in full. However, as I scrolled through my feed this week, I was hit by the realization that this culture of performativity isn’t necessarily all bad.

I'm a baseball romantic — aggressive baserunning from speedy players like Dee Gordon, Billy Hamilton and Javier Baez, walk-off home runs from sluggers like Chipper Jones and late inning come-back rallies made me fall in love with America's pastime.

Two deadly viruses are killing Americans: COVID-19 and racism. And when combined, they culminate in even more dangerous health outcomes for Black communities across America.

When thinking of Michael Jordan’s time at UNC, one thought jumps to mind first: a skinny first-year guard donning the now-famed No. 23, catching a pass at his hips on the left wing from point guard Jimmy Black and knocking down a go-ahead jump shot in the waning seconds of the 1982 National Championship game.

Babes Who Blade was a Facebook group that comprised over 7,000 members, most of them UNC students. To be eligible for membership, one had to be a “babe” – a term the group constructed to denote “anyone who isn’t a cisgender male.” The DTH published an editorial about it two years ago – and every word rang true, right up to the moment of the group’s deletion this past weekend.

The world of computer science is daunting. It’s incredibly fast-paced and innovative, stocked with plenty of brilliant minds pushing to refine code and produce the best technological output possible. We hear about Bitcoin, big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning, among thousands of other buzzwords. We don’t often get a bigger picture of the compassion, creativity and collaboration that is seen in this world — something I have gained from my experience in the computer science department at UNC.
