On March 6, 1900, North Carolina author Mary Oates Spratt Van Landingham referred to North Carolina as being a “vale of humility between Two Mountains of Conceit.” She, and many North Carolinians like her, considered their fellow Tar Heels to be more humble than their upper-crust Virginian neighbors, and more stoic than the rebellious and noisy South Carolinians.

Immigrant rights is one of the defining civil rights struggles of our time, especially now. The work of the North Carolina Council of Churches’ Immigration Alliance focuses on providing resources for faith communities to think and speak theologically about our encounters with our neighbors. At the same time, we are helping to mobilize people of faith, connecting them with grassroots movements and legislative efforts to empower immigrants here in North Carolina.

In a generation defined by social media, Instagram is consistently criticized for presenting false ideals and projecting dishonesty. There is certainly some validity to this when it comes to the more superficial forms of curation. Highly edited FaceTuning, socially appropriate followers/following ratios, flattering filters and Instagram “influencers” shape body image and societal standards to an unattainable degree.

So, I’ve started referring to myself as ‘gay’; that is, I include myself in statements about The Gays™ or ‘gay women.’ I would use the term ‘queer,’ but I feel like people have this idea that ‘queer’ means belonging to a counterculture or living outside of the perceived social norm. With my blonde hair, sorority pin and lululemon, I often get funny, bewildered looks when I describe myself as 'queer.'

During my time in this strange land, I have had to learn the Nacireman greeting practices, so as not to startle the poor Nacireman folk by going off-script. To avoid blank stares, confusion and awkward moments, it is best to follow these two tips:

Look, I get it. You want to keep your Confederate flag. You see it as a symbol of Southern pride. You might have it placed on your bumper beside the words “Heritage, not Hate.” You may not even call it “the Confederate flag,” instead euphemizing away many of its most unpleasant connotations by referring to it as “the rebel flag,” “the Southern cross" or “the Dixie flag.”
