Last week, I was catching up with my older brother when he casually mentioned that South Carolina lowered the drinking age within the state from 21 to 18. Intrigued, I did a quick Google search and was immediately met with a fact-checking site that confirmed this was false. When I asked my brother where he had heard this from, he responded with a simple “I saw it on TikTok.”

Recently, when I go to bed, I wonder if I should be journaling. When I wake up, I feel like I should be stretching. When I walk around campus, I think about how my heavy backpack and poor posture are contributing to the deterioration of my health. When I’m with my friends, I wonder if I’m being present enough. When I’m using my phone at night, I wonder if I need blue light glasses. When I read a corny romance novel, I’m stressed that I’m not reading a self-help book that will “change my life.”

It’s officially football season at Carolina, which means much of the buzz surrounding sports is for the athletes in football jerseys at Kenan Stadium. While women's teams, such as soccer and field hockey, simultaneously compete this time of the year, there is less conversation surrounding these teams.

Editor's note: this article is satire.
You’re on campus one Wednesday afternoon, and something feels off. There’s a rare energy in the air — Gucci perfume with hints of Lululemon — and low whispers of Greek letters seem to be echoing from all corners of the Quad. You’ve been camped out under a tree for hours trying to finish up an assignment, but suddenly, even in the September swelter, every hair on your arm is standing up straight. You feel uneasy and apprehensive.

At 1:03 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 28, I received the first text from Alert Carolina telling me to “go inside now” and “avoid windows.” I ran to the Daily Tar Heel newsroom from my parked car on Rosemary Street, and spent the following seven hours listening to police scanners, watching news channels and reading posts of other UNC students who too spent 191 minutes sheltered in place.

I started writing this article from the dark, sterile basement of Granville West, wedged between my backpack and two classmates who also evacuated Chapman Hall. We collectively munched on the stale Doritos that the Granville staff provided, as we huddled around my phone for news updates about the shooting on campus.

The summer internship season has dwindled to a close, as the rush of LinkedIn recaps dies down and students begin the school year. For some, though, it’s already time to start pivoting to the next internship opportunity — or the deadline to secure a new one has arrived.

For my whole life, I have felt the need to work harder than most of my white peers if I wanted to be given the same opportunities. I strained myself trying to be perfect so I could be considered by what I deemed to be the right universities.
