Curry Plays in Exhibition Victory

The North Carolina men's basketball team defeated the EA Sports/California All-Stars 88-65 on Tuesday at Carmichael Auditorium.

UNC center Brendan Haywood scored 18 points and had 17 rebounds, and Joseph Forte finished with 19 points and seven boards.

Forte had seven of UNC's 22 turnovers.

Junior forward Jason Capel was sick and missed the game.

Ronald Curry played three minutes at point guard, and Julius Peppers dressed but did not play. Curry, who practiced Monday, missed his only field-goal attempt and had one assist.

Women's Soccer to Host Friday Game

Fifth-seeded North Carolina and Connecticut will face off Friday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the 2000 NCAA Women's College Cup.

The game will be played at Fetzer Field, and tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.

The Tar Heels (18-3) advanced to the quarterfinals with a victory against Virginia.

Connecticut knocked off Nebraska to move on to the quarterfinals.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 919-962-2296. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the gate on game day.

The winner of Friday's game earns a trip to the semifinals in San Jose, Calif., on December 1.

UNC Wrestlers Host First Meet

The North Carolina wrestling team hosts the VerticalNet Open at Carmichael Auditorium at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The event used to be called the Carolina Open.

UNC opened its season Saturday with a second-place showing at the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y.

4 Tar Heels Named All-Americans

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced that four North Carolina field hockey players have been named All-Americans.

Seniors Kristen McCann and Jana Toepel and sophomore Amy Tran earned spots on the first team. Junior Abby Martin was named to the third team.

Toepel earned a spot on the first team for the third consecutive year. She scored five goals and had 12 assists this season.

McCann earned third-team honors last season. She led UNC in goals this season with 27. Tran, a goalkeeper, was one of only two sophomores named to the first team. She allowed 28 goals in 24 games this season.

Martin had 12 goals and 36 points.

UNC Swimmers Earn ACC Honors

North Carolina junior Katie Hathaway won the ACC women's swimmer of the week honor, and UNC's Yuri Suguiyama and Duke's Ryan Spoon shared the men's honor.

Hathaway won three individual titles at the Nike Cup, taking the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard individual medley. She was also a member of five relay teams, all of which won first place.

Suguiyama won first place in two Nike Cup events. He swam a career-best time of 15 minutes, 25.44 seconds in the 1,650-yard freestyle. He also won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:26.46.
