Maryland Defeats Tar Heels

Sophomore point guard Coretta Brown led the Tar Heels with 17 points, while senior forward LaQuanda Barksdale chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Tar Heels fell to 10-9 overall and 4-5 in the ACC.

UNC Athletes Earn NCAA Berths

University Park, Penn. -- North Carolina track and field posted impressive results this weekend at the Penn State Invitational. Although UNC coach Dennis Craddock only traveled with about 30 athletes, the men's and women's teams garnered a total of four NCAA provisional qualifiers.

Shalane Flanagan posted a provisional time of 4:56.66 in the mile run. In the high jump, Joy Ganes finished second with a provisional mark of 5-10 3/4. Lutisha Shittu clocked a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.42 in the 60-meter hurdles. Ian Douglas led the men with a provisional qualifying mark of 59- 9 in the shot put.

Gymnastics Falls to No.3 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -- The North Carolina gymnastics team lost to third-ranked Georgia 196.500-191.425.

Maddy Curley scored 9.775 on beam and 9.775 on floor to place second in the all-around with a 38.70. Monica Middleton finished third in the all-around with a score of 38.575.

Wrestlers Top Appalachian State

After dropping the first three matches of the evening, North Carolina reeled off seven straight victories to defeat ASU 32-9 Saturday evening at Varsity Gym in Boone.
