Pickup Hits 65-Year-Old At Full Speed

No charges had been filed Tuesday in regards to the incident, which occurred on the N.C. 54 Bypass.

Henry Lee Mann, 65, of Carrboro was in serious condition Tuesday evening, a UNC Hospitals spokeswoman said.

Mann, who lives off West Poplar Avenue, was in the neurosurgery intensive care unit at UNC Hospitals on Tuesday, the spokeswoman also said.

Mann was crossing N.C. 54 Bypass at 8:25 a.m. when a red pickup truck hit him. The vehicle was traveling east on N.C. 54 Bypass between Oleander Road and West Poplar Avenue.

A report from an eyewitness stated that a red pickup truck hit the man head-on without reducing speed.

Reports also state that the witness told officials the impact threw the man into another lane.

The speed limit for that section of N.C. 54 is 45 mph, reports state.

The driver of the red pickup truck told officials he did not reduce his speed because he did not see the man, reports state.

Upon impact, the driver swerved, crashing the red truck into a median, reports state. The driver, a Chapel Hill resident, pulled over immediately following the accident.

An estimated $500 damage was done to the right side of the vehicle.

Capt. Joel Booker said that when Carrboro police arrived, the pedestrian was unconscious and had suffered serious injury.

Mann was rushed to UNC Hospitals for treatment.

Booker said Tuesday the incident is still under investigation.

"At this point, no situation or charges have been filed."
