Reports state that Jones was charged with one count of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury after he allegedly hit another man, cutting the victim's eye.
Jones was released Monday on a written promise to appear in court.
A 5-foot-11, 235-pound backup fullback who played primarily on special teams, Jones was attending a dance in the Great Hall when people started pushing one another, reports state. He allegedly hit the victim after the victim came to help a friend, who had been put in a full nelson by an unknown man, reports state.
Jones said he had been hit in the eye by the victim's friend first, but witnesses claimed that no one else threw a punch, reports state.
Kevin Best, assistant director of athletic communications, said Monday that Jones was already on suspension for "violating team policies" prior to Saturday's incident.
Jones, a sophomore from Wilmington, played in nine games in 2001 and made three tackles.
