Fencers Battle Inconsistency at Duke

The men's team finished 1-3 on Friday at Card Gymnasium with a 19-8 blowout win against Johns Hopkins and losses to MIT, Brandeis and Duke.

However, the women's team avenged the men's losses Saturday, defeating MIT, Brandeis, Johns Hopkins and Duke.

"The biggest problem we had on Friday was consistency," said UNC coach Ron Miller.

"When one weapon didn't fence well, the other two did, but not well enough."

Despite a subpar team performance Friday, the Tar Heel men received solid individual performances from seniors Chad Haynes and Rob Jones, juniors Seth Axford, Matt McMurray and Josh Webb and freshman Wesley Newkirk. All had more than six wins, with Newkirk winning nine out of his 12 matches.

While the men struggled for consistency, the women put together a complete team effort in their four victories.

When their turn came Saturday, UNC defeated every team placed in front of them, with the epee squad garnering honors for best in the tournament.

The epee starters, consisting of senior Beth Athanas, junior Laura Hays and freshman Ivana Ferrer, won 27 of 35 matches.

The fencers said the support they received from their teammates was a major factor in the team's overall success at Duke.

"Both on and off the strip, participation was really high," Haywood said.

Said Ferrer, "We were all here to help each other and cheer each other on."

Ferrer will be joining Newkirk, Ivona Puszkarczuk and C.J. Webster for the voyage to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the Junior National Olympics this weekend.

"This is my last chance to go to the Junior Olympics," Puszkarczuk said. "I'd really like to put in a strong showing this year."
