Students Start to Set Tuition Strategy

On March 6, the BOG will hear a $400, one-year increase plan passed by the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees.

"I think we talked about how to approach learning lessons from what happened with the BOT and how to refocus our strategy for the BOG," said senior Michael Hoffman, who was at the closed planning session Wednesday night. "We were thinking about ways to increase our efforts to stress affordability and access."

Hoffman said the main strategy the group discussed was how to effectively organize lobbying efforts to convey their opposition to the BOG.

He also said they have formed a system of committees to figure out a plan.

"We do have plans in the works -- we have committees set up with heads to work on various areas," Hoffman said.

He said sophomore Frances Ferris is spearheading the committee organization efforts and that the next step is for her to meet with the heads of the committees sometime in the next week or two.

Student Body President Justin Young said that although Wednesday's meeting was relatively insignificant, he hopes to make more solid progress soon on the general areas the group has outlined.

"There was nothing really big -- we're just trying to figure out what response we're going to take in terms of working with BOG members, lobbying the BOG, and working with the (UNC Association of Student Governments)."
