The win marked the third time this season that UNC has knocked off a team ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time.
Fifth-ranked North Carolina (9-2) was led in scoring by Erin McInnes and Beth Ames, who each scored three goals. Kellie Thompson had a goal and two assists, Christine McPike a goal and an assist, Lindsay Stone two assists and Kate Boyle and Allison Higgins added one goal each.
Georgetown sophomore midfielder Gloria Lozano led all scorers with four goals and an assist. Georgetown fell to 8-1 on the season.
Sophomore midfielder Anouk Peters gave GU a four-goal lead at the 15:08 mark in the fourth quarter with an unassisted tally. That would be the Hoyas' last goal until the 1:25 mark as the Tar Heels went on a five-goal run. They took a 10-9 lead on Higgins' goal with 2:10 on the clock.
Lozano knotted the score at 10 with 1:25 to go, but North Carolina won the ensuing draw. With just 48.7 seconds remaining on the clock, UNC's Stone found McInnes cutting in front of the goal for the game-winning score.
On Friday, North Carolina outscored 19th-ranked George Mason 6-2 in the second period and went on to win by a 10-6 margin at GMU Stadium.
Thompson and McPike each tallied three goals for North Carolina.
George Mason dropped to 5-4 on the season.
