LGBT Group Submits Requests to University

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Alliance presented Provost Robert Shelton last week with a list of requests for improving the campus climate for sexual minorities.

One of the report's recommendations is that UNC establish an Office of LGBTQ Life & Study that would facilitate "consolidating, publicizing and integrating social supports and academic resources available to the LGBTQ community."

The group's priorities also include finding meeting space on campus and hiring a campus adviser.

The LGBTQ Alliance was established last summer to assess the treatment of non-heterosexual groups on campus. Shelton called for a committee assembled from various backgrounds to serve as representatives of the greater campus community.

Shelton said that while some of the committee's suggestions will take longer to implement then others, he is committed to accomplishing its goals.

"We're going to put together a small advisory group that will work in conjunction with us," he said. "It will take some time, but the best way to get things done is to approach it incrementally.

Shelton said it is in the University's best interest to make the LGBTQ community feel safe and welcome.

"(LGBTQ individuals) are a group of people who are vital to this campus because of the intellectual and scholarly creativity that they bring," he said. "The University is the great place that it is because of the contributions of people from a variety of diverse backgrounds."

Professor Pamela Conover, chairwoman of the planning committee, said it is time for UNC to address the problems faced by sexual minorities on campus.

"We hope that the full message of the report is received," Conover said. "UNC is committed to the rigorous intellectual climate that ensures a good liberal arts education, and by creating a welcome climate for LGBTQ individuals, you are benefitting the whole University."

Conover also said UNC lags behind other public universities in fostering a positive environment for non-heterosexuals.

"I think it's past time that we looked at these important issues in a systematic fashion," she said.

Rudy Kleysteuber, former UNC student body vice president, also served on the planning committee. He said the committee's findings have positive implications for the future.

"(The University) has officially said for a while that we don't stand for discrimination against LGBTQ individuals, but until now we haven't actively taken steps to implement this policy," said Kleysteuber.

"I thought that the committee did a great job, a lot of different perspectives were brought to the discussion."
