NIH Orders UNC Lab Investigation

UNC officials are working to bring their standards for animal research into compliance with National Institutes of Health regulations after a formal complaint filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in April. Tony Waldrop, vice chancellor for research and graduate studies, said UNC received a letter from the NIH last week that calls for the University to review its animal care and use program. The letter does not call for any specific changes but does request that UNC's Animal Care and Use Committee submit the results of the investigation by Aug. 2.

LGBT Group Submits Requests to University

In an effort to keep pace with its peer institutions, UNC is considering changes to be more inclusive of sexual minorities. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Alliance presented Provost Robert Shelton last week with a list of requests for improving the campus climate for sexual minorities. One of the report's recommendations is that UNC establish an Office of LGBTQ Life & Study that would facilitate "consolidating, publicizing and integrating social supports and academic resources available to the LGBTQ community."

Students Lobby Legislature

Student Body President Jen Daum and Provost Robert Shelton will head a tuition task force over the summer to develop a five-year plan to present to the UNC-system Board of Governors in the fall. Student government officials will work to keep tuition low, according to the Executive Connection, a monthly newsletter from the executive branch of student government.

Budget Woes Delay Kenan Video Board

UNC will not install a video board at Kenan Stadium this year, Chancellor James Moeser and Director of Athletics Dick Baddour announced last week. UNC officials said their decision to postpone the board was influenced -- although not directly caused -- by the state budget crisis. The $2 million board and public address system were to be funded privately. "Because of the budget constraints the state and University face this year, Dick Baddour and I feel it is better to delay the installation of the video board," Moeser stated in a press release.
