The Patterson Medal is based primarily on athletic accomplishment, with some focus on leadership and sportsmanship.
Hathaway was recently named one of the 50 greatest women's swimmers in Atlantic Coast Conference history. A two-time captain, Hathaway holds UNC records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes and is the ACC recordholder in the 200 breaststroke. She earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in 11 of the 12 individual events in which she qualified and added 13 All-America honors on relays.
Jackson, one of the best defenders ever to play in the ACC, earned first-team All-America honors in 2001.
Jackson captained the Tar Heels in each of his final three seasons. He started in each of the last 86 games in which he played and was twice named Carolina's Most Valuable Player. He scored six goals and added 15 assists from his sweeper position. Jackson plays in the MLS for the Colorado Rapids.
