The new office, which once housed a fitness assessment center, will now be a space for health-orientated campus groups whose goals include peer education and working for change.
"This room will be an extension of our ongoing services but will be open later in the evening and will provide a specific physical place for student groups to meet," said Dean Blackburn, one of the CHSB coordinators.
Last year, groups were forced to find meeting locations all over campus, but now they will have a permanent location for events.
"It's hard to find spaces on campus with buildings closing down and with the construction; the new building provides a resource for us," said Jamie Shuster, president of Carolina Cancer Focus, which will use the new space.
"It's an outlet for us to be able to go somewhere to do the work we have to do."
The room also will be used by advocacy organizations like N.C. Fellas, Students Against Destructive Decisions and Advocates for Sexual Assault Prevention.
The room contains a photocopier, a computer, storage space for archival materials and other resources. The room can also be used as a meeting place.
"We've been using it since it opened," said Anup Dashputre, student director of Safe Ride, a group that also will use the office. "It works well for organizations to come together and share ideas. It has been an invaluable resource that totally expands our possibilities."
Blackburn said student groups have expressed interest and enthusiasm for the new room.
