Research Position to Improve UNC-D.C. Relations

New vice chancellor is from UC system

Pending approval of the UNC Board of Trustees, Allison Rosenberg, who works at the University of California Office of the President, will serve in the position.

Tony Waldrop, vice chancellor for research, said that shortly after he arrived at the University, he was told that the position was being developed by the department.

One of the issues the department focuses on is supporting UNC's research missions.

Rosenberg's position will assist in developing methods for finding funds, as well as working closely with officials in Washington, D.C.

The new administrator said the University needs an active liaison to serve between the campus and the capital.

"Chapel Hill is among the finest universities in the world and, so far, does not have a focused representation in the Washington community for federally sponsored research," Rosenberg said. "My position was created to elevate Chapel Hill's visibility with Congress, the executive branch and others in the community."

Rosenberg has been working as director of research policy and development for the UC system.

She said that with her extensive knowledge and interest in academic research, she hopes to make advances in research methods at UNC through collaboration with Waldrop and officials in Washington.

Waldrop said that once the description of Rosenberg's position had been formed last year, a search committee was constructed to find an eligible candidate.

Several people applied for the position, and out of those, five were selected for an interview. Once it was narrowed down to the top three, those candidates came to the University to learn more about the office.

Waldrop said that aside from building a relationship with federal funding agencies, Rosenberg will learn about programs available for funding, as well as recommend faculty for panels and research grants.

Rosenberg holds a degree from the University of California-Berkeley and a doctorate from Harvard University, both in psychology.

Rosenberg said she is excited to be moving to the area because her mother is from Charlotte and several of her family members attended UNC.

"I have deep roots in North Carolina and believe it's an extraordinary time and opportunity to join the leadership team of UNC."
